FireSmart Services in the Yukon
Practical wildfire risk reduction, based on local conditions
Wildfire risk is a growing reality across the Yukon. FireSmart work is one of the most effective ways a property owner can reduce the likelihood of loss and improve firefighter safety during a wildfire event. My approach to FireSmart is practical, site-specific, and grounded in experience working with trees, terrain, and access constraints common in the North.
What FireSmart work involves
FireSmart is not about clearing everything. It is about strategic reduction of wildfire intensity around structures and access routes, while retaining ecological function and property value.
Typical FireSmart work may include:
Selective thinning and removal of hazardous trees
Reduction of ladder fuels
Pruning to reduce crown fire potential
Creation and maintenance of defensible space zones
Cleanup and removal of flammable debris
Improving access and safety for firefighters
All work is planned with local wildfire behaviour, prevailing winds, slope, and fuel types in mind.
FireSmart assessments & reports
In addition to physical FireSmart work, I now offer structured FireSmart assessments for residential and rural properties.
These assessments are suitable for property owners who want:
A clearer understanding of their wildfire risk
Written recommendations before committing to work
Documentation to support grant applications or future planning
An assessment typically includes:
On-site walk-through of the property
Identification of key wildfire risk factors
Photo documentation
A written summary outlining priority actions
This service is being developed carefully and will continue to improve as standards, tools, and local requirements evolve.
Mapping & planning (developing service)
For larger properties or clustered developments, FireSmart planning benefits from a broader view.
I am in the process of developing basic mapping and spatial planning tools to support FireSmart decision-making, including:
Simple property or area maps
Identification of priority treatment zones
Clear visual context for recommended work
These tools are intended to support clear communication and practical planning, not to replace on-the-ground experience.
Who this service is for
FireSmart services may be appropriate for:
Homeowners in forested or interface areas
Rural and semi-rural properties
Landowners planning staged FireSmart work over time
Clients seeking clearer documentation of wildfire risk
If you are unsure whether FireSmart work or an assessment is appropriate, an initial conversation is often the best place to start.

What Our Clients Say
“Greg did a great job FireSmarting my property. He is always professional and his expertise as an arborist in the UK meant the job went smoothly even with trickier trees near my house. I would highly recommend him! My yard looks great!.”
M.P.
A practical, phased approach
FireSmart does not need to be done all at once.
Many clients choose to:
Start with an assessment
Address the highest-risk issues first
Improve their property incrementally over time
This approach spreads cost, reduces disruption, and still delivers meaningful risk reduction.

Safe Tree Work
When removing a tree near a structure, safety is our top priority. Each decision we make—whether to fell from the ground, climb and dismantle, or use a machine—is based on minimizing risk to people and property. Trees with structural defects or unbalanced canopies can behave unpredictably, so we assess every factor before taking action. Climbing and rigging are only used when there’s no safe felling option, and machinery like a MEWP or crane is considered when climbing isn’t safe. This methodical approach ensures each removal is done in the safest, most controlled way possible. It also helps clients understand that what might seem like a simple job can involve serious hazards and professional judgment. Have a look at our infographic that explains the decision process.
